INRI – Winston Sauli – 1970

This is personally a very important South African political painting. Winston painted this piece after being released from Prison by the the Apartheid State in 1970.

The expressive brush strokes and pain is evident in the work, reminds me of Basquit’s style but remember this was before Basquit.

Winston died, largely forgotten and homeless on the streets in Johannesburg soon after.
